PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Change” is the new buzzword in America today, and changes are occurring with the AlfaSeeYas too!
After many, many years of service, our secretary, Karen Hugo, is being relieved by Rhonda Dean, and Jim Huber is being relieved by Patty Rowe! Karen and Jim have been in their positions since the beginning of the club, and their contributions have been stupendous. They have done a marvelous job these many years, so please take the time to send them a note of appreciation for all they have done for us! Their email addresses are: Karen Hugo khugo@aol.com and Jim Huber at 317BKP@comcast.net.
Tim Dean is replacing Tony Monson, who was also one of the founders of the club, and has been our FMCA National Director since the club’s inception. Tony’s better half, Sharon, says, “Its about time!” Though he’ll be retired from director duty, Tony will continue to be our Webmaster. If you haven’t viewed our site for a while you should do so now, as Tony has done quite a bit of work on it. Send Tony a big “Thank You” too! djnosnow@aol.com
This is the last issue of the SeeYa Connections to be edited by Jim. When Patty Rowe takes over for the next issue (June) she will be putting it out in electronic form as a PDF file and we will be primarily emailing it to our members. There are about 50 members who do not have email, so this will be a cost savings for the club. Of course we will still send out those 50 or so by regular mail. Please be sure to keep us updated if your email address changes. You can do so by contacting any of the officers, but the secretary is the one who keeps the master roster files. Maybe you should add Rhonda Dean, our incoming secretary, to your email address book! rhondadean@gmail.com
Of course, all of the above is assuming you approve of all of the nominees. There is an election ballot included at the end of this newsletter. Please feel free to ‘write in’ any additional candidates. You may mail the ballot to Karen Hugo, or you can fill it out, scan it, and attach it to an email to Karen. Her addresses are: khugo@aol.com, Karen Hugo, 205 Rainbow Drive #10565, Livingston, TX 77399-2005.
Since Belle and I live in Southern California, Karen Hugo asked about us possibly setting up a rally for the Rose Bowl Parade. I looked into it in depth, and found it would be a daunting task to coordinate. However, a pair of our club members, Don and Patty Rowe, attended the event last year, and they were totally excited about the quality of their experience. Here is what Patty said, “We had such a great time at this year's Rose Parade Rally. It was probably the best organized event I have ever been to, and was 6 days of non-stop things to do and places to go, and the catered food was very good. There's a reason they feed you three meals a day … you wouldn't have time to cook on your own. It was absolutely first class all the way, and the couples running the show were very nice, friendly, and totally efficient. So, if enough people want to do it to make it feasible, and you can get them to park the Alfas together (which shouldn't be a problem), then you can put Don and me on the list of potential Rally-goers.”
The group organizing this rally is the SOI Motorhome Club, a chapter of the FMCA. They have been hosting this rally for over 30 years and offer the most complete series of events you will find. As members of the FMCA we are welcome to join the rally. Their schedule of events is a full three pages long, so rather than take up space here, I suggest you go to our website (http://www.alfaseeyas.com) and look at the agenda and other information there. It is posted under “rallies” as the Rose Parade Rally 2009-2010.
The cost of the rally is $2195, but if a large number of AlfaSeeYas attend, we will each receive up to a $100 discount. Regarding the cost, Patty Rowe said, “I know that $2195 is a lot of money, but when it was over, we had no doubt that we got our money's worth.” An application form for the rally is included in this newsletter, and there is one posted on our website. If you apply for the rally, please be sure to use our application form, as that is how the organizers will keep track of our numbers and provide any earned discounts. There are already 4 coaches (including us) who have said they are going. You have enough time to plan for this, so join the fun! Immediately following this is the Indio pre-rally and rally, so you could “kill two birds with one stone”.
NOTE: AN EMAIL WILL FOLLOW THIS ONE WITH THE ONE PAGE DESCRIPTION OF THE ROSE BOWL RALLY
Our Arnie Burr is wagonmaster for the Alfa National Rally in Bakersfield, April 29 – May 6. The AlfaSeeYas will have at least 39 coaches attending and Arnie has graciously provided us with a time and place to have a business meeting; there are several important things to be discussed. Among them is, “How do we encourage more people to wagonmaster rallies?” We changed our By Laws a year ago to allow us to have multiple vice presidents. The idea was to have regional vice presidents who could assist with promoting rallies in their areas. Unfortunately, we have not had any success in acquiring additional VPs. How can we get people to take on these roles? I have asked all past, present and future officers to consider these questions and I will present their suggestions at that meeting. If you have any ideas regarding these or other things you would like to see happen with the AlfaSeeYas, please let me know.
Belle and I will be traveling to the south, southeast and east this summer. We’ll leave from the Bakersfield Alfa National Rally when it ends May 6, and head for Texas, then Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and then up the east coast to Maine. We want to stay in the north east long enough to experience the change of colors, so we probably won’t return home until sometime in October. We would like to be able to meet up with as many members as we can along the way, and will be happy to assist with putting together a rally or two as we travel. In order to do that we simply need “someone on the ground” who can help arrange for places to meet. If you would be willing to assist with this, please give me a call or email.
As we will be putting a lot of miles under us this summer, I hope that diesel prices continue to stay low. As always, we wish you safe and happy travels, and hope you have a fun-filled summer.
A NEW EDITOR! As John said in his message ‘times are changing”! My wife and I want to thank the Alfa members who contributed to this newsletter during our almost six years (23 editions). Our leadership was available when I needed information about members and membership and opinions on what to include in our newsletter.
It has been a great learning experience. I attempted to communicate what I believed was important to members - leaving the technical ‘stuff’ to those who know it best and communicate it best via the Yahoo web site.
As the chapter grew to more than 600 members the amount to time required increased also. The printing, folding, taping, stamping and labeling consumed most of a day. Keeping the email only list accurate was always a challenge as members changed ISPs often. Monitoring other publications and web sites for ideas helped me capture ideas when they were ‘hot’. The content was a day to day input! Thankfully my wife and I had assistance from other Alfa owners with the quarterly mailing.
Our best wishes to Patty Rowe as she begins the job of editor and brings her thoughts and talents to make the newsletter better and more informative.
Please support her efforts to email the newsletter to members by keeping our secretary notified of your current email address - or if you prefer to receive the paper version.
Patty’s contact information is listed on page one of this newsletter. I encourage all members to share experiences with her and she with our members!
If you see a SYA, with Illinois plates towing a Jeep Cherokee, in the NW during July and August it might just be us! Jim (and Kris Huber).
MEET THE NEW EDITOR! Patty Rowe and her husband Don have been Alfa SeeYas members since 2006. Snowbirds for the past three years, they spend summers at their home in Oregon, and winters in the Southwest, mostly on their lot at Outdoor Resorts in Indio California. Semi-retired from their Internet business, they still like to stay in the loop via the Datastorm satellite on their Alfa Gold. They love attending rallies, and especially enjoy meeting and socializing with other Alfa owners. Patty is looking forward to editing the newsletter, and says she hopes she can do half as good a job as Jim Huber has done!
I DIDN’T GET MY EMAIL COPY! If you do not receive your email newsletter by the first week in Jan, Apr, Jul and Oct please contact Patty Rowe (see page 1). Your email contact with her will give her your correct email address. She plans to send email versions to all members with email addresses.
NEW LOOK FOR THE ALFASEEYAS.COM WEB PAGE. As the current server we are using (CityMax) is constantly changing and updating their services, we are also trying new ideas to make our web site more user friendly and appealing. When you view the home page count the Alfas in the heading photo? This photo was taken during the convoy to the Western Area FMCA Rally Jan 2005. (Actually, there were 30 in that lineup. The photographer was standing on the lead motor home. Plus, not all had come out of the Emerald Desert RV park yet). The website is www.alfaseeyas.com
Check into the web site often, as I learn new tricks on web page design, I might put them in.
Check out the "Alfa Fix It Page" there is one with our President's Tricks and Tips on how to keep your Alfa running smooth. Also, we are constantly adding photos to the "Photo Album" page.
If you have photos of an Alfa Rally, Gathering, or get together, send them to djnosnow@aol.com along with a caption for each. They may not all get online, but we will pick the best 5 or 10 to post. Send them in their original size, I will size, crop, lighten, darken, etc. as necessary.
If you have any comments or suggestions concerning the web page send them to me. Enjoy! DJ "Tony" Monson - Web Master
STREAKING - I haven’t check ‘snopes.com’ to see if this actually works! If you ever get the sudden urge to run around naked _ you should sniff some Windex first…it will keep you from streaking!
FMCA UPDATE - Tim Dean – Alternate National Director/ AlfaSeeyas. There was a special telephone meeting of the Board of Directors of Family Motor Coaching, Inc. (parent company of FMCA) for discussion on the 2010 conventions. There was a motion made to have only one convention in 2010. This was discussed and voted down by the FMCA Board at St. Paul last summer. However in this down economy the Commercial members of FMCA are feeling the pinch and do not want to have to financially support two FMCA conventions a year. There is also a short time frame between the planned Redmond, OR convention and Affinity’s “The Rally” in Louisville. Affinity is the parent Corp. of Good Sam. After lengthy discussion there was a vote to end the discussion and the question “that FMCA have only one convention for 2010” was put to a vote. The motion failed with 2 votes “for” and eleven votes “against”. Therefore it was announced that FMCA will continue with two conventions for 2010 as planned.
The dates for the 2010 International Conventions are:
FMCA’s 83rd International Convention: March 22-25, 2010 Albuquerque, NM
FMCA’s 84th International Convention: August 11-14, 2010 Redmond, OR
Of course there is still time for anyone wishing to attend this year’s Conventions. The 82nd FMCA International Convention in Bowling Green, OH July 20-23 at Bowling Green State University.
In an effort to attract new members to FMCA they are awarding each chapter five (5) free 1 year certificates to be used by our chapter to recruit new members to FMCA and hopefully join our chapter. If you know of anybody who doesn’t belong to FMCA and has an Alfa and would like to join us please contact our President John Bohn ( jfbohn1@mac.com ) or (513) 310-1735.
HEART ATTACK WARNING SIGNS FOR WOMEN In past issues we shared information about Heart Attack Symptoms and how to recognize when someone is having a Stroke. Recently we were privileged to have a spokeswoman from the American Red Cross tells us about Heart Attacks and Women. Husbands - this is important information for you - help her recognize the symptoms and secure immediate medical assistance. Alfa Women - become part of the Go Red for Women. Call 1-888-my-heart (1-888-694-3278 or visit GoRedForWomen/org ).
Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most of them start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often the people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are some of the signs that can mean a heart attack is happening.
As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms:
* Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
* Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
* Shortness of breath. This feeling may occur with or without chest discomfort.
* Other signs: These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or vomiting, lightheadedness, and back or jaw pain.
If you or someone you are with has chest discomfort, especially with one or more of the above signs, don’t wait longer than five minutes before calling for help. Call 9-1-1.
Our thanks to the American Red Cross for this information!!!!
KNOW THE SIGNS OF STROKE - After writing the above article I thought a brief reminder of “knowing the signs of stroke” would be appropriate! So here they are!
* Sudden weakness in the face, arm or leg.
* A sudden severe headache with no cause.
* Sudden vision problems in one or both eye.
* Sudden confusion or difficulty speaking.
* Sudden dizziness, loss of balance, loss of coordination or difficulty walking.
CPR AND AED - And then why not remind you of your need to be trained in CPR and the use of an Automated Electronic Defibrillator!
Ask yourself, “How will I feel if one of my loved ones have a heart attack or stroke and I am unable to help until the medical professionals arrive?
DO IT! Contact your local Red Cross and learn (or re-learn) CPR and AED!

MEDEX - last issue we reminded members of a valuable FMCA benefit. I (John Bohn) send out a thank you email to folks when they renew, if for no other reason than to let them know we received the payment. In the last series of emails I have been touting the Medex benefit .
One member recently wrote our president John Bohn saying . “Hi Thanks for all your work.
Yes the MEDEX is great. Last year for health reasons I was unable to drive the Alfa back home to Denver from Little Rock AR. I discussed the problem with Meed at FMCA and they provided a no hassle deal.
My son drove the rig home. The bill was + - $1200. This included the $100 a day for him. All we had to do was to send in the receipts. That will pay my dues for many years.”
EMERGENCY INFORMATION CARD
Make a small card to fit in your wallet. Include your name and address, the name address and phone number of your family member(s), the name and phone number of your physician, and other important contacts. You may also want to list your medications and list your spouse’s medications on the reverse side.
Make a larger version and keep one in the glove box of both your car and motor home.
You can buy laminating material at your local office supply store.
Consider putting your information on one side of the card and a list of your medications on the opposite side.
I.C.E. (IN CASE OF EMERGENCY) - You may recall an earlier article on programming into your cell phone an In Case of Emergency (ICE) phone number e.g., your son or daughter? Medical professionals can look for this number and make a call if you are unable to make a call.
FUEL WATER SEPERATOR (FWS) "Courtesy of Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation"
Hopefully, you will never fall victim to the problem of your engine cranking but not starting. Many people have experienced this problem after “draining the fuel” from the fuel water separator as instructed by the manual. The engine ran after doing this, but soon died. Some basic pointers about the fuel water separator FWS can help you avoid this issue.
The FWS removes water and solid contaminants from diesel fuel. Installed between the fuel tank and fuel transfer pump, the separator comes with either a spin-on filter element with sight bowl or a water-in fuel (WIF) sensor. Sight bowls allow operators to see contaminants collected in the bowl. WIF sensors illuminate a lamp in the dash when water in the fuel is sensed. These types of filters promote draining only when necessary.
If your unit came equipped with either of these two types of filters they should be replaced with the same type filter. The FWS filter should be changed at each oil change.
Only drain a small amount out of the bowl at a time. A quarter cup or less should be adequate. Typically, air will replace fuel when drained out and diesel engines do not like air. Air in fuel lines can cause the engine to not run. Remember to do the following when draining the fuel water separator:
Drain only if contamination is found (sight bowl needed or WIF Lamps is lighted)
Drain only bare minimum amounts
Elevate engine RPM when restarting after draining
If air has entered the fuel lines during draining of the fuel water separator, bringing the engine RPM to or above 1000 RPM will help carry the engine through any stumble when re-started.
Diesel engines need clean, moisture-free fuel and there is no guarantee that you receive this quality of fuel at the pump. Moisture can also develop in fuel systems during normal vehicle operation. The FWS is the item that gives your engine a quality fuel source, keeping the pointers above in mind.
A TOILET WATER LEAK!!!! Quite a few RVers have told me they turn off the water to their coach when they leave the coach. We have not been doing this! One evening my wife goes to the bathroom and quickly screams “there is water on the floor”!
A spray was coming from the back of the toilet. We spent the rest of that evening without running water. The next day the repairman came and discovered the water valve was leaking. After replacing the valve he pointed out to me the on/off valve on the line leading to the toilet. You may want to check to see if you have a valve for that purpose. We are now considering if we should turn off the water when I leave to coach? Fortunately for us the problem was discovered early. Can’t imagine what problems we would have if we’d been away for hours. (Jim Huber)
ALFASEEYAS PRE-RALLY AT EMERALD DESERT RESORT
Jan. 3-5, 2009
Twenty- seven coaches were in attendance for the pre-rally at Emerald Desert Resort in Palm Desert, CA. We only reserved 20 sites for this pre-rally but we had a great response and were able to accommodate more rigs. Coaches began rolling in on Saturday morning and thanks to Dick Brubaker, Tim Dean and others everyone got parked and set up in time for our catered spaghetti dinner. After dinner we had introductions.
We had many first time rally attendees as well as new AlfaSeeYas members. Also joining us for meals were members who winter in the area.
Sunday morning everyone enjoyed a breakfast of sweet breads and fresh fruit with coffee and juice. A big thank you to Shirley York and Virginia Brubaker who helped the rally master, Rhonda Dean, prepare the breads. These ladies along with Betty Martin and Belle Bohn helped cut up fruit and prepare everything for the breakfast each morning. Sunday afternoon Jon Goldstein and Martin Miranda from Alfateers in Fontana, CA spent a couple of hours talking to the attendees about the services they offer and answering questions. Many Alfa owners have been to the service center and were very impressed with the quality of work and customer service. Sunday night everyone enjoyed another catered meal with a choice of BBQ baby back ribs or chicken breast with cranberry/almond sauce. After dinner, John Bohn, President of AlfaSeeYas, conducted a business meeting which was followed by a game of LCR (left, center, right). This is a dice game that requires absolutely no skill, but generates a lot of laughter and competition. Ultimately, the pot was won by Shirley York!
Monday morning after breakfast, John and Belle Bohn shared a slide show of their 2008 Alaska trip. Along with the slide show, they gave many tips of what to do and more importantly what not to do when you go to Alaska. As most folks know John and Belle are retired teachers so we had the benefit of lots of books, maps, and other visual aids!! It was a morning well spent. Monday afternoon several of our group took advantage of the gorgeous weather for golf and other activities. On Monday night we participated with the Club House resort dinner and poker bingo afterwards. Several of our members won at the bingo games that night.
On Tuesday morning we began lining up at 7:30AM on Gerald Ford drive for the Caravan to Indio. What a site with 27 coaches lined up!! Everyone obeyed orders from our fearless caravan leader Don Rowe and rolled into the holding area at 8:30AM , our scheduled arrival time. Everyone had good things to say about Don’s skill at leading 27 coaches. It was truly a team effort. We had two coaches, who were unable to join us at Emerald Desert, waiting in the holding area to park with us at the rally. Additionally, Dave and Chris Ela joined our group on Jan 7th. With all the comings and goings we ultimately had about 30 coaches at the rally.
The Alfa SeeYas chose to go in a day early in order to obtain parking close to the activities with access to electricity. Once we got settled we had our traditional coach walk for those who wanted to participate. This is an opportunity for folks to share improvements and modifications they have made to their coaches. Everyone seems to enjoy the coach walks and new ideas are always exchanged. We had a potluck dinner on Tuesday night which as usual was great!! No one goes away hungry. Each evening we got together for a happy hour with snacks. This is a time to get to know each other better and share what we have learned from the seminars we have attended each day. Those who choose to attend the night time activities go as a group and the others sit around the bonfire and partake of spirits and fellowship! AlfaSeeYas are a very friendly group and always approach other Alfa folks they see at campgrounds and rallies to join us. During this get together this group found and brought in several new members!
As a first time rally master I have to say this was a great group of folks. Everyone pitched in to do whatever was needed to make this pre-rally and rally a great success. You can see pictures of our caravan, a group picture courtesy of Gene Bergstrom and an aerial/kite picture of our group taken by Darin Skinner on the website. Thanks to these folks for taking and sharing the pictures.
Editor’s note: Our thanks to Rhonda Dean for this report.
RALLY SCHEDULE
We hope you will read information on upcoming AlfaSeeYa and FMCA rallies and conventions. We've listed them in this newsletter for your convenience.
As mentioned earlier, if you would like to suggest a local rally, please contact our President John Bohn. A group of AlfaSeeYas can get together very easily for a few days during the week, or over a weekend.
Please check the scheduled rallies and add some of them to your schedule. NOTE: THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF SITES AVAILABLE AT MOST EVENTS. You can insure a spot by reserving now. Sometimes it is possible to accommodate more than the number originally planned.
Note: The cost of Alfa See Ya rallies is for two adults in one Alfa motor home.
NEED HELP PLANNING A RALLY? John Bohn, our chapter president has created several documents to help those interested in planning a pre, post or other rally for our members. You can contact John (see page one) and ask for any or all of the documents. They include: Rules of Thumb for Estimating Costs and Planning a Pre or Post Rally in Brief.
