PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings to all,

Belle and I have returned from our summer trip to Alaska. We had a good time, learned a lot, saw a lot, and paid a lot for diesel! Ouch! Thanks to the advice of some of our club members who had previously traveled to Alaska, we had a very successful journey, and we are going to share what we learned, experienced and saw at the Pre Rally being planned in January prior to the FMCA Indio Rally.

It doesn’t seem possible, but Belle and I have been Treasurer and President for almost two years now. Elsewhere in this issue is an article by Rhonda Dean, chairperson of the nominating committee. All of the major officer positions are up for election and I would very much appreciate your contacting the nominating committee with nominations or suggestions. Karen Hugo has been our fantastic secretary since the inception of the club and would appreciate a break after these many years. Jim Huber has also been our wonderful newsletter editor since the beginning, and he too would like to have someone else take over. Having worked with these two folks for almost two years, I can personally attest to the fact they have done an unbelievably great job for the club. I am sure they would be happy to assist anyone who wants to “learn the ropes”! Please seriously consider “stepping up to the plate”!

There has been a lot of concern about being able to obtain Alfa parts, now that the manufacturer is no longer in business. I had the pleasure of stopping by the Alfateers service facility in Fontana on our way back from Alaska. Jon Goldstein, who was the customer service coordinator for Alfa Leisure, is heading up this operation that has purchased all of the spare parts and name rights, etc. for the Alfa coaches. They have a nice, well-equipped facility, and to date have been getting rave reviews from those who have contacted them to obtain parts, or have gone there for repairs. Jon has committed to providing a variety of Alfa services for our pre-rally just prior to the Indio FMCA rally. That pre rally will again be at the Emerald Desert RV Resort in Palm Desert. Information and reservation forms for that rally can now be found at our website, http://alfaseeyas.com. Please check the website frequently, as a form for Alfateers Service requests during the pre rally will be posted there as well. Jon says they will also offer some nice amenity upgrades, such as embroidered dash or floor mats, exterior snap on window shades, hidden headlight upgrades, as well as P-molding replacement and carpet cleaning. Finally, if you have need of a uniquely Alfa part, call Alfateers. They probably have the parts you’ll need and will ship anywhere. As a reminder, we only have limited spaces reserved at the Emerald Desert RV Resort, so if you are thinking of going, please reserve soon. This has always been a fun pre rally at a beautiful location.

And now, a serious matter. Unfortunately one of our newest members suffered a total loss of her coach due to a fire that may have started where the muffler joins the exhaust manifold. This prompted a flurry of postings on the AlfaSeeYa Yahoo group websites, which brought out the fact there was a Freightliner recall campaign directed at coaches with Cat engines and rear radiators manufactured between September 22, 2003 and November 29, 2005. The campaign number is SF352A. That campaign expired as of Oct. 31, 2007. Normally, Freightliner is good about contacting owners when these recalls occur, but it may be the case an owner of a coach sold their unit before having recall services performed, and the new owner had no clue. We received no notice of this campaign, and our coach was produced during the period stated. I got a copy of the campaign info and took it to a Freightliner facility. As it turns out, there were apparently two or more different configurations of the exhaust muffler assembly. Our 2005 SeeYa is totally different than the one in the recall and needed no modifications. (They did service the power steering reservoir, for which we had received a recall notice.)

For you own peace of mind, be safe and contact Freightliner to see if there are any past or current recalls for your coach, especially if you are not the original owner. If you have purchased a used coach, be sure to contact Freightliner to let them know you are the new owner. You will need the freightliner VIN number when you call (found on the inside of the pantry door). Here is the contact information:

Contact the Warranty Campaigns Department at (800) 547-0712, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday, Web inquiry at AccessFreightliner.com / Support / Submit an Inquiry, or the Customer Assistance Center at (800) 385-4357, after normal business hours, if you have any questions or need additional information.

Our sincere thanks go out to Larry Thoma who wagonmastered the pre rally for the St. Paul FMCA Convention. Tim (and Rhonda) Dean attended as Alternate National Director for the convention and you can read Tim’s report elsewhere in this letter. They and all who attended said it was a great outing with great people!

Since I live in Southern California, Karen Hugo suggested I look into wagonmastering a rally in association with the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. I am in the process of doing that, but I don’t think it will be feasible for this coming New Years. However, as things progress I will keep our website updated. If you would be interested in attending such an event, please email me ASAP at jfbohn1@mac.com. What I am trying to arrange is a rally at an RV park somewhere near the parade. From that location I want to have a tour bus transport us to the parade where we would have reserved grandstand seating with an excellent view. That may be topped off with a post parade walking tour of the floats, a stop at a famous eating venue on the way back, or something else. Don’t know all the options yet. Many years ago Belle and I went to the Rose Parade from San Diego on a tour bus with her mother and other (at that time) “Senior Citizens”. It was a great way to go.

With this in mind, let me remind you that the primary reason for the formation of the AlfaSeeYas Chapter of the FMCA was to give our members an opportunity to gather before, during and/or after the various FMCA events put on yearly in all parts of the country. It definitely makes attending these events a much more pleasurable experience. However, a rally does not have to be associated with an FMCA event. If there is any kind of happening in your area (such as the Tournament of Roses Parade here in SoCal) you can easily put together an AlfaSeeYas get-together. It isn’t hard, and we will give you all the assistance and support you’ll need to do it. If you have any questions or ideas about putting on a rally, please email me or give me a call at 858 822-8468 (Pacific time). Belle and I are planning on making one last “big run” to the east and southeast this coming summer. We would welcome anyone’s suggestions as to potential rallies we might help with planning and attending during that time. We would look to be on the road from about April or May until September or October. While on the road we will probably try to attend the Lobster Fest rally being planned by Ron and Carol Davis and Terry and Owen O'Neill in Trenton, Maine , September 16-19. Though not an AlfaSeeYas only event, that lobster is awfully good, and the folks attending will be Alfa people (5th wheels as well as coaches). It will probably be like attending an Alfa National Rally in that respect!

Which brings me to the closure of this message, “What about the Alfa Leisure Sundancer’s Club”! As you probably know, the manufacturer had formed an owner’s club, with eight chapters scattered geographically throughout the nation, and a “full-timers” chapter, the Roadrunners! This organization was factory supported financially (the AlfaSeeYas was/is not), and that financial support of the Sundancers clubs no longer exists. As of this writing, most of the Sundancer chapters have decided to continue operations, and are trying to determine how to do so financially. At this time the chapters are still planning a National rally in Bakersfield, CA next spring. You do not have to be an AlfaSeeYas member to attend that rally, but you do have to be a member of one of the Sundancer chapters. Do a google search for the Sundancer’s club and you can find access to the local club for your area.

Even as we continue to face hard financial and oil price times, I hope this newsletter finds you happy, healthful and able to be “on the road”.

Sincerely, John F. Bohn President

NATIONAL DIRECTORS REPORT – 2008 St. Paul, MN FMCA 80th International Convention

Our National Director Tony Monson was unable to attend the convention, so as Alternate National Director my wife Rhonda and I drove from Tucson, AZ to Oronoco, MN to attend the pre-rally where we met with and had a great time with other AlfaSeeYas. Our wagon master Larry Thoma and his lovely wife Faye did a wonderful job. Everyone really enjoyed how they had organized and handled the pre-rally. One of the highlights of the pre rally was a dinner at historic Hubble House in Mantorville, MN an original Pony Express and Stage Stop built in 1800. Many of us also enjoyed a day trip to Red Wing, MN home of Red Wing shoes and Red Wing pottery.

Declining to park with the other National Directors we caravanned with the group to the convention site and all parked together. We all enjoyed great camaraderie and as always had enjoyable “Happy Hours” each evening.

On Sunday I attended the National Directors training session, learning what to expect at the Governing Board meeting the next day. I also attended a class on “Roberts Rules of Order” which is used to conduct the Governing Board meeting in an orderly manner.

Monday morning at 7:00 AM I checked in at the Governing Board meeting site and picked up the voting credentials for our chapter. The meeting started sharply at 9:00 AM and lasted till 5:15 PM that evening.

Of the possible 513 Governing Board voting members a total of 368 voting members were represented at the meeting.

It was an intense and lively meeting as the proposed 2009 budget was under funded by $508,000 and if we couldn’t balance it we would all be faced with a dues increase to $49.00 a year. The budget has been affected by declining membership from a high of approx. 129,000 in ’03 to 112,562 as of June ’08, lower convention support from manufactures and lower magazine ad revenue from a high of approx. $9.5 mil. in ’02 to an estimated $8 mil. in ’08.

One of the first areas discussed to cut costs was to do away with the MEDEX plan as a benefit, which now costs $500,000 a year. After much discussion the motion to drop this failed due to most delegates not wanting to cut benefits to the members. After going thru the proposed budget we found enough dollars in other categories and areas to get to a balanced budget and forgo the proposed dues increase at this time.

I attended the INTO area meeting on Wednesday as Board Delegate for our chapter. We voted on several housekeeping items and approved the budget for ’09. We received a certificate in recognition of the 5th anniversary of the AlfaSeeyas chapter in FMCA. Our secretary Karen Hugo now has that in her chapter files.

The newly incoming President for INTO Sonny Gillespie gave a short speech and reminded everyone that the INTO Area Org. will be the host for the 81st FMCA Convention in Perry, GA March 16th-19th, 2009 and will be looking for volunteers from all chapters in the INTO Organization to help make this convention a success.

Respectfully Submitted – Tim Dean Alternate National Director

ALFASEEYA’S FIVE YEAR CERTIFICATE:

Recently our Chapter received a Five Year Certificate from FMCA. Below is the letter we received from Connie Pool, FLMCA National President.

May 19,2008

Dear Alfaseeyas Chapter:

Chapters are a very critical part of the Family Motor Coach Association by providing the basis for our govemance structure. However, a chapter's most important function is to provide an environment where fellow motor home owners gather together in fun and fellowship to enhance their experience as an FMCA member.

Participating in a chapter enriches our membership and strengthens the bonds that develop among us. Keeping a chapter active over a period of time involves all the members working together for the good of the chapter, and we wish to recognize and pay tribute to the time and talent contributed by your members that has led to your success.

Please accept my sincere congratulations as you celebrate your fifth anniversary. We extend our best wishes for many more years of fun and camaraderie.

Warmest regards,

Connie Pool

National President

Family Motor Coach Association

RALLY REPORT - Twenty-One Rvers participated in the joint SeeYa and Sunrisers September Rally in Central Illinois. Participants enjoyed tours of Caterpillar’s Engine Assembly Plant and Track-type Tractor (Bulldozer) Assembly Plant in the Peoria Area.

That Sunday we were stranded in Mackinaw, IL by the rainfall from Hurricane Ike. Between 6 and 7 inches of rain closed the road to the camping area. The water receded later on Sunday (one day free camping due to the high water). We departed for Springfield on Monday a day late. One Alfa from becoming stuck in the mud but with help from others they were freed by late morning!

When we arrived at our Springfield, IL area campground we were told they would have turned us away on Sunday since many of their sites were flooded.

During the next few days participants enjoyed the Abraham Lincoln Museum and other Springfield sites. Lots of potlucks and dinners at local restaurants filled them with lots of good food. The usual sharing of ideas and coach modifications were discussed. Our three days in Springfield were warm and sunny! We had a wonderful time in spite of Hurricane Ike!

Things RV Owners Should Know

RV – The Critical Factor

DIESEL PRICES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN GASOLINE --- WHY?

(From Wikipedia and the internet)

The editor and his wife recently returned from a 3500 miles trip around the Great Lakes - obviously we bought diesel fuel in different states and in Ontario. The price varied considerably ($5 Plus in Ontario vs. $3.96 in Indiana). This variance had us asking the question….”Why such a variation and why is diesel more expensive than gasoline?”

From Business Week (9/15/08) “Taxes aimed at commercial trucks mean diesel costs anywhere from 40 cents to one dollar more per gallon than gasoline.” In a previous issue they described how price is established and one shocking number stuck out - China is adding 23000 cars per day!

From Wikepdia - “ Fuel taxes in the United States vary by state. For the first quarter of 2008, the average state gasoline tax is 28.6 cents per US gallon, plus 18.4 cents per US gallon federal tax making the total 47 cents per US gallon (56 ¢/imperial gal; 12.4 ¢/L). For diesel, the average state tax is 29.2 cents per US gallon plus an additional 24.4 cents per US gallon federal tax making the total 53.6 cents US per gallon (64.3 ¢/imperial gal; 14.2 ¢/L).”

Fuel taxes in Canada can vary greatly between locales. On average, about one-third of the total price of gas at the pump is tax. Excise taxes on gasoline and diesel are collected both federal and provincial governments, as well as by some select municipalities (Montreal, Vancouver, and Victoria); with combined excise taxes varying from 16.2 ¢/L (73.6 ¢/imperial gal; 61.2 ¢/US gal) in the Yukon to 30.5 ¢/L ($1.386/imperial gal; $1.153/US gal) in Vancouver. As well, the federal government and some provincial governments (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Quebec) collect sales tax (GST and PST) on top of the retail price and the excise taxes.”

ARE YOUR DUES DUE? - If the date on your address label is ‘highlighted” and you have a red sticker here (Your Dues are Due!) Please send your check - $10/year - multiple years encouraged - Payable to: Treasurer AlfaSeeYas Chapter 3590 Round Bottom Rd Cincinnati, OH 45244-3026

A REMINDER ABOUT FMCA DUES To be a member of the

AlfaSeeYas you must keep your FMCA Dues paid.

A GREAT IDEA! During the editor’s recent RV Caravan trip around the Great Lakes our friends from Georgia showed us a card both of them carry while traveling. In the event of an emergency rescuers will know where they are camped and they are traveling with two dogs. Here is the information they carry on their 3 X 5 cards.

“We are traveling in a Alfa See Ya Motor Home with (state) license #12345. We are staying at:

_______________________________________________________

Our car is a (color, year and manufacturer) with (state) license # 123456.

In case of an emergency please contact my wife/husband as at the motor home. Cell phones are (111-222-3333 and 3334). If we are together please contact our son/daughter (name and address) (home phone #) (cell phone #).

There are pets in the motor home. Please take care of them.”

The editor extends his thanks to George and Bev Morlan of Acworth, GA (SOB Owners).

LIST OF MEDICATIONS - You should also consider carrying a small card in your wallet - on one side - list your medications (allergies) and on the other side the medications (allergies) of your spouse.

BUG CLEANER - What do you use to clean the bugs off the front of your big white bug smasher? Lately we’ve received several suggestions ….. here they are: Shower Shine; Scrubbing Bubbles; Sparkle Glass Cleaner; the more expensive stuff from a camping supply store!

And one from the WD-40 web site - “Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40.”

If you have a special solution that works for you send the editor a note and we will list all the replies in the next newsletter. (editor = 317BKP@comcast.net)

FROM THE SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE AUGUST 20, 2008 Taking on Water - A recreational vehicle (not an Alfa) became submerged in De Anza Cove at Mission Bay yesterday after the driver lost control of it while trying to launch a boat from a nearby boat ramp, authorities said. The RV lost is grip on the rampo and rolled into the water. The vehicle was towed out.

WINTERIZING YOUR RV from Jerry Wood - “park your RV next to a palm tree - if that is not possible park it next to a cactus.”

MORE USES FOR LEMON JUICE- Most of you read the article in Family Motor Coaching Magazine about the uses of lemon juice. Here are a few more courtesy of Chef Noah and the internet.

Everyday Uses For Lemon Juice

Remove ink spots from clothing.
While ink is wet, apply lemon juice liberally to the spot, then wash the garment in normal cycle with regular detergent in cold water.

Get rid of dandruff.
Apply one tablespoon of lemon juice to your hair. Shampoo, then rinse with water. Rinse again with a mixture of two tablespoons lemon juice and two cups water. Repeat every other day until dandruff disappears.

Write with invisible ink.
Use a Q-tip as a pen to write in lemon juice on a piece of white paper. Once it dries, hold the paper near a hot light bulb. The writing will turn brown.

Eliminate blackheads.
Rub lemon juice over blackheads before going to bed. Wait until morning to wash off the juice with cool water. Repeat for several nights until you see a big improvement in the skin.

Create blonde highlights.
Rinse your hair with one-quarter cup of lemon juice with three-quarter cup water.

Deodorize a cutting board.
Wash with lemon juice to rid a cutting board of the smell of garlic, onions, or fish.

Remove fruit or berry stains from your hands.
Rinse hands with lemon juice.

Remove rust and mineral discolorations on cotton t-shirts and briefs.
Use one cup of lemon juice in the washer.

Clean a microwave oven.
Add four tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup water in a microwave-safe, four-cup bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Then wipe clean.

Whiten, brighten, and strengthen fingernails.
Soak fingernails in lemon juice for ten minutes, then brush with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Rinse well.

Stop bleeding and disinfect minor wounds.
Pour lemon juice on a cut or apply with a cotton ball.

Relieve poison ivy.
Applying lemon juice over the affected areas should soothe itching and alleviate the rash.

Clear up facial blemishes.
Dab lemon juice on the blemish a few times a day.

Eliminate odors in your humidifier.
Pour three or four teaspoons of lemon juice into the water.

Relieve rough hands or sore feet.
Apply lemon juice, rinse, then massage with olive oil.

Clean brass, copper, and stainless steel kitchen sinks.
Make a paste from lemon juice and salt, scrub gently, then rinse with water.

Relieve a cough.
Mix four tablespoons of lemon juice, one cup honey, and one-half cup of olive oil. Heat five minutes, then stir vigorously for two minutes. Take one teaspoon every two hours.

Train a dog to stop barking.
Squirt some lemon juice in the dog's mouth and say "Quiet."

Relieve constipation.
Before breakfast, drink four tablespoons of lemon juice in one cup warm water. Sweeten with honey.

ANOTHER INTERNET WARNING ----- FROM SNOPES.COM

If you are going to pass something along . . . . let it be THIS!

Just a word to the wise. E-mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other municipality. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address.

Same with 'prayer chains' -- be wary!

Almost all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards.

All it was, and all this type of e-mail is, is to get names and 'cookie' tracking info for telemarketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for their own purposes.

Any time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to '10' of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get good luck, or whatever, it has either an e-mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and e-mails of those folks you forward to, or the host sender is getting a copy.

Each time it gets forwarded, then it's able to get lists of 'active' e-mails to use in spam e-mails, or sell to others that do.

Please forward this notice to others and you will be providing a good service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting 30,000 spam e-mails in the future.

(If you have been sending out the above kinds of email, now you know why you get so much spam!)

Alaska

More than half of the coastline of the entire United States is in Alaska.

Amazon

The Amazon rainforest produces more than 20% the world's oxygen supply. The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean. The volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States.

Antarctica

Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country. Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica. This ice also represents seventy percent of all the fresh water in the world. As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert. The average yearly total precipitation is about two inches. Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, i.e.), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.

Brazil

Brazil got its name from the nut, not the other way around.
