President’s Message

By the time you read this the holiday season will have passed, and I hope you all enjoyed the holidays with good friends and family. Belle and I purchased a new home in Oceanside, CA on the same day we sold our house in Del Mar, CA. We moved into the new house on the 14th, then left for Austin, TX on the 18th, leaving a bunch of boxes still unpacked. I’m sure they will be there when we return after spending Christmas with our daughter, then going to the AlfaSeeYas Pre-Rally and Indio FMCA Rally, early January.

This past year has been an interesting learning experience for me. Since taking over the reins of the organization in April I have really come to appreciate the voluntary services of many people who help this organization tremendously.

Your Secretary, Karen Hugo, does an amazing job of keeping our membership roster up to date. With over 600 members, many of whom are on the move, you can imagine the multitude of continuous changes to mailing addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers in addition to the ongoing process of adding new members and updating membership renewals. She does this marvelously, and provides valuable input and suggestions to this new president.

Hannah Dubuc has been our membership coordinator since the group’s inception and is the one who sends out those “gentle reminders” your membership is up for renewal or past due! Having been familiar with the organization from day one, she also provides valuable insight and advice, for which I heartily thank her. After four years of continuous service, Hannah has asked to be allowed to step down, as she has other local volunteer interests she wants to pursue. Thank you Hannah for all your years of service to the AlfaSeeYas!

I believe also since day one, Jim Huber has been our Connections newsletter editor. He does an outstanding job of compiling information and entertaining tidbits over a span of several months, then publishing it quarterly in a comprehensive format. Perhaps just as formidable a task as the writing is the printing, collating, addressing, stamping and mailing of the 600 or so final pieces he sends. He has help in this final task from a couple of other members, and I hope he will give them credit here. Their service is most appreciated.

Tony Monson is not only our National Director, he also maintains our website, www.alfaseeyas.com as webmaster. Websites are always in dynamic change, and Tony has done a wonderful job of keeping ours up to date, and a good source of all kinds of information helpful to the membership. If you haven’t bookmarked the site, you should do so, and refer to it often for current information.

A couple of reminders:

· Check your mailing label of this newsletter now to see when your membership expires. Renewing your membership for more than a year at a time is most appreciated, as it reduces our workload.

· If you change any addresses (especially email addresses) or phones, please let Karen Hugo or me know ASAP.

After the Alfa National Rally in Texas in April, Belle and I plan to travel to Alaska. We have never been there so we are looking for helpful information, and fellow travelers to make the journey. I have received some good information from others who have made the trek. If you have information about that trip, or would like to join us, please let me know. I do not feel qualified to act as wagonmaster for such a trip (not having been there before), but I am willing to help coordinate such an adventure.

As 2008 opens, we hope you all have a year of safe and happy travels. SeeYa down the road!

John F. Bohn, President

Editor’s Note: Please note John’s new email address --- jfbohn1@mac.com

Also, as John requested my wife and I are thankful for the mailing assistance of Mike and Karolyn Lippert, Dave and Judie Moore and John and Susan Richardson.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE, ETC.

Intermittent Electric Power? When the electric service to my coach was intermittent, I thought it was the transfer switch and was ready to replace it. Fortunately, I checked the condition of the 50 amp-30 amp step down connector I had been using for years and found that the plug blades were not clean. A few minutes with some emery paper made the blades bright and I've had electric service to the coach since. Bruce & Rosemary

FURNACE DAMPER You may recall Bruce Monte’s article in the June newsletter …“AC PROBLEMS AIR FLOW PROBLEMS ???? (see Alfa's response at the end of this article! Bruce Monte writes... I finally solved a problem that was intermittent for years. Our A/C would work fine most of the time, but there were days when I could not get real cooling. I had it checked out at several service locations, always the same result...everything is working fine, temperature differential is fine, etc., etc. Yesterday after returning from a full day out, the inside temperature was 96 degrees with outside at 94. There was some cool air coming from the vent at the foot of the bed (we have a 2003 coach) but no air coming from the vents running down the street side of the coach. We had just been at Johnny Walker in Las Vegas where they tested the unit and found everything to be working properly. A call to Dick Albritton (an AlfaSeeYa member) got us the solution to the problem. Dick suggested I remove the vent cover at the base of the bathroom sink and use a mirror and flashlight to see if there was a problem with the ductwork. When I looked toward the back of the coach, I saw a butterfly valve in the ductwork for each system (heat and a/c). When we turned on the a/c, the valve opened as it should and I could feel the airflow. Apparently, the valve was occasionally sticking partly open, and of course, there was very reduced airflow in the coach. This last time, the valve must have stayed completely closed.

Unfortunately, intermittent problems can haunt us and make it difficult for a service tech to solve the problem. I guess the best solutions are those found at the expense of others. I hope this problem does not occur with your coach, but if you are experiencing a/c problems but the unit seems to be running fine, check the airflow in the ductwork. (Bruce Monte)

Editor’s note: I contacted Alfa’s Tech Support and here is their answer.

From Alfa Customer Service. "That is correct Mr. Huber, Your unit has two round 8" butterfly dampers, they are located in the Hydraulic compartment, just behind the rear wheel in the passenger side. You can get to them from either under the coach or behind the Freightliner plate located inside that compartment."

After several months of waiting for a reply Alfa Customer Service sent me a copy of Service Bulletin #0023 which recognizes the furnace damper potential problem. “Cold air from the A/C may re-circulate back through the duct into the furnace and into the return air. This reduces the A/C’s capabilities and will not allow it to cool to its maximum potential.” The service bulletin however lists unit numbers 148 to 155, 157 thru 159, 161 thru 163, 166. I contacted them again asking if this process applies to my coach and later coaches.

WINDOWS CLOUDING UP? We had several windows cloud up - (lost their gas?) I asked Alfa about this in mid-November - here is the reply from Customer Care <CustomerCare@alfaleisure.net>. “The warranty was extended by the window manufacturer for two extra years to a total of three“:

PRODUCT INFORMATION On the AlfaLeisure.com web site there is a Product Information area. This area contains Product Information, General Tips, and Recall Campaigns. The categories include: Appliances, Chassis, Electrical, Exterior, Interior, LP Gas Systems, Miscellaneous and Plumbing. When I checked the site in mid-November there were recall campaigns for Vehicle Systems, Brake Actuator for 5th wheels, Kwikee Levelers, and LP fittings for 2005 Founder.

NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY - The Editor did some checking early in mid-October after receiving another email about cell phone numbers being released to telemarketers. They are NOT! But, my registration had expired! It was easy to renew - both home and cell phones. Type “Do Not Call Registry” in your search engine and follow the instructions! Or http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/donotcall/index.html

Here is an important note from the web site!

Once you have registered, your phone number registration will be effective for 5 years. It will be illegal for most telemarketers to call you, and you will be able to file a complaint if a telemarketer does call you. The website https://www.donotcall.gov provides information about filing a complaint.”

DO NOT DIAL 90# ON YOUR TELEPHONE. I dialed '0' and asked the operator who confirmed this was correct so please pass it on... (l also checked out Snopes.com. . .this is true, and also applies to cell phones!) I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.

Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons.

DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security! Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!! (Tom Ingalls)

From Snopes.com - Email Petitions (courtesy of Karolyn Lippert)

To whom it all concerns:

Just a word to the wise. E-mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other municipality. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address. Same with 'prayer chains' -- be wary.

Almost all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in
Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all this type of e-mail is, is to get names and 'cookie' tracking info for telemarketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for their own purposes.

Any time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to '10' of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get good luck, or what ever, it has either an e-mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and e-mails of those folks you forward to, or the host sender is getting a copy, each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' e-mails to use in spam e-mails, or sell to others that do.

Please forward this notice to others and you will be providing a good service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting 30,000 spam e-mail in the future.

(If you have been sending out the above kinds of email, now you know why you get so much spam!)

Check it out:

Freightliner Recall - not sure if you saw the article in FMCA October 2007 magazine - recall affects some 2003 through 2008 CX-R, VCL, XB-R, XC, XC-F, XC-L and XC- motor home chassis manufactured between June 13, 2002 and June 13, 2007. The potential number of chassis is 6,227. The problem is with the ZF model 8018 steering gears and you could lose the ability to stear the coach. Recalls were schedule to be sent in November 2007. If in doubt call (800)547-0712. Have your chassis number when you call.

OR RALLY APPLICATION

There has been considerable interest in having a gathering in the Florida area tied in with the FMCA Southeast Rally, in Brooksville Feb. 6-10, 2008. At this time it would be difficult to arrange space at an RV park, so we have begun preparations to have a pre-rally at the FMCA site two days before the rally, beginning the morning of Feb. 4. Though only in the early planning stages, here is what you can look forward to:

· Roundtable, information sharing session

· Coach walk – participants share their coaches in an open house fashion

· Restaurant night

· Pot Luck Dinner night

· Social hour(s) each day (BYOB & and Hors D'oeuvre)

· Golf is available

FMCA rallies are usually attended by 1000’s of coaches. You will find the rally much more rewarding if you are with a group, especially a group who owns the same kind of coach. During the actual rally the group continues to have social hours to share and discuss what was learned and experienced at the FMCA seminars, and much more. It really makes a big difference.

During the event you would be dry camping. There are dump stations on the grounds, and fresh water is available. Also, during the rally there will be a “honey wagon” available to dump your tanks, for a fee, if you don’t want to move your coach.

The club’s thanks goes to Ron and Vicki Flowers and Doug and Mary Perkinson for helping to organize this get together! I know they will make it entertaining for all who attend.

You can find more information about the FMCA Rally, and register for it at:

http://www.fmca.com/areas/southeast/sea_2008.asp

If you have any interest in attending, please let me know as soon as possible. When you respond please let me know your cell phone #, John Bohn -

(Phone 513-310-1735)  JFBohn@roadrunner.com

Brooksville, FL Pre-Rally, February 4-10, 2008

A “Mini” Pre-Rally is planned whereby attendees will enter the Brooksville grounds two days early for a Pre-Rally get-together. There are already 9 coaches signed up to attend. A coach walk, dinner out, and pot-luck dinner are planned, along with the usual social hour get-togethers each day throughout the event. If you would like to join the party, please contact me as soon as possible at (513) 310-1735 (Pacific Time). Registration for the FMCA Rally is mandatory. Details may be found on their website, www.fmca.com.

Pomona, CA Pre-Rally, February 22-28

Here too, a Mini Pre-Rally is planned on the grounds of the Pomona FMCA rally that actually runs from the 25th through the 28th. Those attending will be volunteering as Tram Monitors during the convention (a total of 8 hours per person). We will have three days of free parking before the convention, most of which will be spent partying and seeing the sights. There are many, many things to do in the LA area, and FMCA has set up tours to a lot of them. Check out their website for details. All who have volunteered and signed up so far have said they would like to go on a tour of the Alfa Leisure factory, so we are planning on that, as well as daily social hours, a dinner out, and a potluck weather permitting. If you would like to join the party, please contact me (JOHN BOHN) as soon as possible at 513 310-1735 (Pacific Time). Registration for the FMCA Convention is mandatory. Details may be found on their website, www.fmca.com.

AlfaSeeYas National Rally re: Pre-Rally - I understand there are several Alfa Chapters planning pre-or post rallies. If you are interested contact the chapter - you can locate chapter officers at the Alfa Leisure web site - click on chapters. (See information on the National Rally earlier in this newsletter.)

ARKANSAS 2008 - AlfaSeeYa Rally The Wagon Masters are still evaluating two different possibilities: (1.) Batesville, Arkansas area -- CG would be the Raceway RV Park --probably May/June. Venue would be a tour of the Mark Martin ( NASCAR #6 and veteran Race car Driver) Museum. Also a Eastman Chemical Bio-diesel manufacturing facility which produces 1 million plus gallons/year of product and is expanding and several other sights and points of interest.

(2.) Would be a Fall Rally in
Mountain View for the annual Bean Fest and Outhouse Race plus tours of the Ozark Folk Center, Blanchard Springs Caverns and several musical events.

Wagon masters have to firm up more details and expect to have a decision by mid January. Both locations are great and friendly as well as economical....considering current and future cost of fuel.

CENTRAL ILLINOIS 2008 - AlfaSeeYa/AlfaSunchasers - The wagon masters are planning another Central Illinois combined rally in September 2008. Details will be provided in future newsletters.

A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office.

“Is it true," she wanted to know, "that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?"""Yes, I'm afraid so," the doctor told her.

There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied,
"I'm wondering, then, just how serious is my condition
because this prescription is marked 'NO REFILLS.'"

An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anesthesia he asked to speak to his son. "Yes, Dad, what is it?" "Don't be nervous, son; do your best and just remember, if it doesn't go well, if something happens to me, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife...."

The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
