---Chapter Information---

President's Message - We recently finished a five-day stay at the FMCA International Convention near Charlotte, NC. On Sunday we met with several other owners and caravanned from Kannapolis, NC to the rally site at Lowe’s Speedway in Concord. During the rally we met up with more owners and on Tuesday thirteen couples enjoyed an evening meal at a local restaurant. While there, we were visited by Jay & Donna Blumenthal. Jay is the President of the International Area Chapters in FMCA and has recently been re-elected to that post. We’ve always appreciated Jay’s taking time to visit with AlfaSeeYas members, and the job he does for us with FMCA.

What should have been a pleasant evening at the Ricky Nelson Tribute show was interrupted by some gastric distress that caused me some concern. While resting behind the stadium, I was lucky to get the attention of one of the FMCA staff. He noticed that my pulse was racing and after EMTs were summoned, they determined I was suffering from Atrial Fibrillation. A quick ride to the emergency room resulted in my receiving excellent care at Northeast Trauma Center. In fact, from the time the FMCA volunteer intervened, until my release from the hospital two days later, everyone’s effort and involvement was extremely professional and reassuring. Fortunately, the results of echocardiogram and stress tests came back normal; only concern is due to the Atrial Fibrillation. By Thursday evening, I was back at the rally, enjoying the evening show, Riders of the Sky.

On Friday, most members started heading out, continuing their summer plans. From my limited opportunity to talk with other AlfaSeeYas members, it appears that all enjoyed the Convention. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the AlfaSeeYas members who helped us at the rally.

Anyone who e-mails me at by September 15, and correctly identifies the following 800 number, will be entered to receive a free year’s dues. The number is 1-800-527-0218. There will be three winners. This is a very important number and should be in the front section of your wallet or ID folder and in your cell phone. If you need a hint go to: http://www.fmca.com/membership/benefits/full_family/medex.asp

Finally, a couple of reminders. Your dues are $10.00 per year ($20.00 for two years) and the label on this newsletter shows when your membership expires. After 120 days we must drop unpaid members. There is a re-instatement charge of $10.00 if your membership lapses past 120 days.

We have a Website for the chapter at which is maintained by Tony Monson (see address in this newsletter). Suggestions, comments, etc., are welcome. We recently added an information area that recaps many of the tips and suggestions from all our prior newsletters (see information in this newsletter). You might find the answer to a question, or a tip that will save you service problems. Give it a look.

AlfaSeeYas National Director Report

August 14 – 18 FMCA Convention

Sharon and I arrived in the Charlotte / Concord North Carolina area at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway on 11 August.  This was our appointed time to check in at the governing board parking area.

On Sunday the 13th I attended the International Area (INTO) caucus.  The first part of this meeting was training for newly elected national directors and a refresher for the rest of us.  There was discussion on some upcoming issues that will be presented and voted on for approval or rejection during the governing board meeting to be held on Monday the 14th.

On the 14th, starting at 6:30AM, the governing board members were bussed to the West Cabarrus Church located about 2 miles away.  This was the only available facilities large enough for the meeting.  Out of a possible attendance of 490 chapter representatives plus 14 executive board members for a total of 504 governing board members, we had a quorum of 394 members present.

We had nine proposed By-Law amendments plus twelve Policy and Procedure proposed changes to work on.  There were two By-Law proposals that, if approved, would cause us to change our chapter By-Laws.  One would change the term limits of the National Director, Alternate National Director and Elected Temporary Delegates.  The other proposal would completely eliminate the Alternate National Director position.  The Governing Board, almost unanimously (including my “NO” vote), rejected both of these proposals.

There was a great concern among the many national directors that I talked to prior to the governing board meeting about the proposed “BAR”, Board of Area Representatives.  This was a proposal that the Long-Range & Development Committee came up with as directed by a governing board motion made at the Ames, Iowa meeting in 1999.  Its purpose was to develop a governance plan to “have an organizational and governance structure that best achieves its (FMCA) goals in a competent, timely, and fiscally responsible manner.”  If enacted, it would have 71 members made up of:  the national president, the 10 national area vice presidents, the 10 area senior vice presidents and 50 chapter national directors (five from each area).  It would reduce the responsibilities of the “Governing Board” to where it would never meet again and do all of its voting by mail.  Needless to say, this proposal caused for a great deal of discussion and it was thought that it would put our meeting way beyond the 5:00PM quitting time.  As your representative, I took the floor and expressed my concerns on not to approve this proposal.  The governing board prevailed in expressing that things are working as is, and quickly voted down the “BAR” proposal.

The last part of the meeting was accepting the many committee’s reports of which I’ll list a few interesting items:

FMCA works with a $16 million budget of which $12 million is returned back to the members in way of benefits and conventions.  For your annual dues of $35, there is a $99 return of benefits for each member.  The Medex program has been extended through December 2008.

As of June 30, the active membership count was 122,327 families and the last membership number assigned was F378236.  This changes daily, as there were many new members signed up during the convention.

            The upcoming national conventions are:

Perry, GA                   March 19-22, 2007

Redmond, OR           August 13-16, 2007

Pomona, CA              February 25-28, 2008

St. Paul, MN               July 14-17, 2008

Perry, GA                   winter 2009

Louisville, KY summer 2009

Albuquerque, NM      winter 2010

Redmond, OR           summer 2010

Other items are:

The average age of FMCA members is 66 for males and 62 for females.

The attendance count was below the expected estimate of about 6000 coaches to 3153 member coaches and approximately 1400 commercial exhibit coaches.  (Mainly due to fuel prices)

The 8th annual International Area (INTO) rally will be held in Harrington, DE April 19-22, 2007.

On Tuesday 15th the chapter had a dinner get together with about 30 members plus Jay & Donna Blumenthal, our National Area President.

On Wednesday 16th I attended the International Area Gathering.  We conducted business for the International Area by changing a few By-Laws and Standing Rules to be in line with the National By-Laws changes.  We were visited by Don Moore, National President; Connie Pool, National Senior Vice President; Ginger Painter, National Secretary; and Jim Kern, National Treasurer.  The previously elected INTO officers were presented.

A scary thing happened when we got a call from Rosemary saying Bruce was in the hospital.  I worked with Jay Blumenthal, INTO president, and we got it Okayed to move their coach over to the RV resort with full hookups where Rosemary would not have to worry about starting the generator and watching her water and septic tank levels.  She could then give her full attention to Bruce and be at the hospital as long as needed.  It seemed to come out okay, and Bruce was back with the crowd for the last day.

Sharon and I had a great time even after our 2358 mile trip from Indio, CA.  A possible day or two of rest in the area,  and then we head back to Indio again.

Thank you for allowing me to represent our chapter.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Good News re: Identity Theft -

A new technology named "Identity Angel" has been developed by Carnegie Mellon University. The software crawls through information available on the web and notifies people for whom information, freely available on the web, can be sufficiently compromised by those seeking your identity. To learn more enter the words 'Identity Angel' in your favorite search engine.

Pet Owners Beware! May 12, 2006

Wyoming has a new rule which would require cats and dogs deemed "unvaccinated" to be immediately euthanized if they SCRATCH or bite a human. Bear in mind, vaccinated animals overdue for boosters are considered to be "unvaccinated" despite the science showing durations of immunity for the rabies vaccine well beyond 3 years.

Pet owners living in or traveling through Wyoming with their animals would be well advised to take action on this matter.

Service tips.....coach will not start!

After being parked with full hookups for a week, we couldn’t get the coach to start and found the engine batteries were discharged. We tried to charge them using the generator and when that failed, we contacted road service. After thirty minutes connected to the service truck, we were able to start the engine and drove five hours to our next destination. When we next tried to start the coach, after having full hookups for five nights we found the batteries again were not charged and we realized we needed to find the problem. It turned out to be the 135-amp circuit breaker located on the wall to the left of the two engine batteries. This is a $22 part from Freightliner. None of the dealers near Hershey PA had a replacement but we were able to get one from the Freightliner distributor two days later. We now carry a spare. In discussion with the parts tech, it seems this item has a higher than normal failure rate. This was a very easy fix. There have been several mentions of failure of this part on the various Alfa websites.

Blue Ox Tow Bar - If you are using a Blue Ox Tow Bar and Base Plate you may want to consider buying two 1 & 1/2 inch rubber chair leg tips and insert them in the receiver holes of the base plate to keep the dirt out! (Jim Huber)

Norcold Refrigerator - While at the Charlotte Convention, I spoke with a tech from Norcold, discussing the many continuing problems we have had with our refrigerator (outside board replaced, cooling unit replaced, both boards replaced.) He asked if my fans were running (“Of course”, I replied.) Well, they weren’t!! He had me remove the outside panel and look at the back of the refrigerator. There are two connectors just below the plastic cover for the outside circuit board. A thin and thick wire goes to each connector. If they are on correctly, the white wires are on the left and the black are on the right. Mine were reversed. While there, I checked the white hose that comes down from the back of the unit. There is a black plug that is supposed to “weep”. If it is blocked, water will back up into the trough located below the fins inside the refrigerator, possibly spilling over to the bottom of the refrigerator and out the door. Simple to fix…use a thin dull wire or needle to open the small hole. Do not leave the plug off as this will permit humid outside air to enter the refrigerator. Finally, another tip from the tech… the wire from the thermistor clipped to the fins inside the refrigerator should be clipped onto the second fin from the right. Mine was on the seventh fin. Looks like I had some service techs that didn’t know what they were doing. (Bruce Monte)

New C93 Light Bulbs - This article appeared in the FOCC Chapter Newsletter - 2nd Q Freightliner Flyer and is reprinted with the permission of the author Rudy Morris.

If you have encountered one of these new light bulbs.... maybe your porch light burned out and you went to change it. A CEF93...what??? Looks like a regular 1146 or 1156 bulb...but it says C93 and made in China. I tried to find this bulb at auto parts stores, Wal-Mart..... no one carried this bulb! Having been 'burned' in years past by substituting an 1156 for an 1141 and melting my porch light fixture...I was a little cautious about getting the right bulb. The fixture had stamped on the back plate, substitute was a 1003 bulb. So I tried the smaller 1003LL which I hoped would not melt things. It worked ok but seemed to burn out faster that the C93. Well I finally made time to research light bulbs and compare specs. Here is the result.

C93 - 1.04 amps - New bulb used in outside RV lights.

1003LL - 0.94 amps - RV recommended replacement for C93

1093 - 1.19 amps - 7% more watts - good replacement only 1.9WQ more & much longer life.

1142 - 1.44 amps - 38% more watts - old standby bulb easy to find at any auto parts store.

1141- 1.44 amps - 38% more watts - old standby bulb easy to find at any auto parts store.

1156 - 2.1 amps - 100% more watts - old standby bulb but TOO HOT - could melt your fixture.

They escorted us across the bridge -- our 24 unit caravan (wagon master has a 2004 SeeYa) What a site! Our SeeYa was #17 in the caravan. Thirty-two days and a chance to see many new sites - The Bay of Fundy, The Halifax Tattoo, icebergs and whales. (Jim and Kris Huber)

A Little Humor! (Source = Web Site)

Subject: The work of Stephen Wright -- If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he is the famous erudite scientist who once said: "I woke up one morning and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates." His mind sees things differently than most of us do, to our amazement, and amusement.

Here are some of his gems:

1 - I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
2 - Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back.
3 - Half the people you know are below average.
4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.
7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
8 - If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work?

9 - All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand.
10 - The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
11 - I almost had a psychic girlfriend,...but she left me before we met.
12 - OK, so what's the speed of dark?
13 - How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink?

14 - If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
15 - Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
16 - When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
17 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.
18 - Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.
19 - I intend to live forever......so far, so good.
20 - If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?
21 - Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
22 - What happens if you get scared half to death twice?
23 - My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."
24 - Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?
25 - If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
26 - A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.
27 - Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
28- The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.
29 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.
30 - The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.
31 - The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.
32 - The colder the x-ray table, the more of your body is required to be on it.
33 - Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.
