President's Message As we go into the summer “travel” season, we also go into Rally season. Many of us plan to attend various events around the country to gain knowledge, meet friends, and share experiences with our Alfas. The primary function of the AlfaSeeYas is to promote rallies and outings so that members can join together to enhance the enjoyment of these events.

A rally can be organized to compliment any event, or to serve as its own function. In the past Bruce and Rosemary Monte led rallies at Branson, MO and Boerne, TX to enjoy local attractions.

Owen and Terry O'Neill organized rallies for the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, NM (with the assistance of Cal and Patti Chastain), and Mike and Karolyn Lippert along with Kris and Jim Huber will be hosting their fourth consecutive rally in Central Illinois this September. Since the AlfaSeeYas are a chapter of FMCA, it is natural to have rallies linked to FMCA events. Pre-FMCA rallies in Indio, CA were hosted by Bruce and Rosemary Monte, Bill and Peggy Harju and Dave and Carole Kiesig. Pre and Post FMCA rallies in Florida were organized by Joe and Mary Schoenmaker, Dale & Liz Ouderkirk, and by Mike and Karolyn Lippert with help from John & Susan Richardson. And a Post-FMCA Indio rally was wagon mastered by the Harjus with assistance of my wife Belle and I.

All of those events were a success because of the dedication of the wagon-masters and co-wagon-masters. We owe them all a great deal of gratitude for their hard work.

Many of you are aware of local events all over the country that would be great venues for a local rally. (For example: The Bean Fest and Championship Outhouse Races in Mountain View, AR and Death Valley Days in CA. In addition, there are many FMCA events throughout the year where large numbers of coach owners convene for great seminars, commercial exhibits, and entertainment.

Upcoming FMCA Rallies:

Northeast Area, July 11-14, Augusta, NJ

Midwest Area, September 12-16, Manchester, IA

South Central Area, September 25-28, Sedalia, MO

Rocky Mountain Area, October 3-6, Farmington, NM

Western Area, January 9-13, Indio, CA

Southeast Area, February 6-10, Brooksville, FL

Conventions:

Redmond OR, August 13-16, 2007

Pomona, CA, February 25-28, 2008

St. Paul, MN, July 14-17, 2008

Now is when the chapter needs your help. We need wagon-masters to head up Pre, Post or Local Rallies, or to coordinate members joining to caravan into an FMCA event. (For simplicity, the word "Rally" shall be used henceforth to indicate any of these kinds of activities). There are many benefits in doing this, including the pleasure of meeting new and interesting people, and getting fellow AlfaSeeYas owners together to party, learn and share. Also, it is a tradition in our club for larger rallies, the wagon master's rally expenses are paid.

The key to success in hosting a Rally is planning, the earlier started, the better. Dave Kiesig, your vice-president, and I would like you to seriously consider volunteering to wagon-master a Rally for any event. I have now had the experience of doing this, and Dave hosted one of the best Pre-FMCA rallies I have attended. We are here to help you through the entire process, which is not complicated. I am formulating a Rally Planning Guide, largely based on my experience in planning the Pre-Redmond Rally, and will make it available to you as a primary source. In addition, Dave and I are available by phone or email almost continuously.

Please consider stepping “up-to-the-plate” and hosting a Rally. With Dave's and my assistance, I am confident you can plan and carry out a successful one, and will reap great benefits, enjoyment, recognition, and appreciation for doing so. Also, let us know if you would be willing to assist with hosting a Rally in case you do not want to be the main wagon-master. Call Dave or me if you have any concerns or questions. The chapter would really appreciate your help!

MEMBER'S INFORMATION/WARNING

Ladies & Gentlemen!!!! What a slick way to steal your, purse laptop computer and your identity while you are pumping gas. The Broward County (FL) Sheriff's Office has produced a 3-minute video - available for easy viewing on the Web. It illustrates a form of property and identity theft, carried out while the victim is pumping gas. The lesson....Do not let valuables on the passenger seat or where they can easily be accessed by a thief. Consider locking your doors while you are out of the vehicle.

TRICKS, TIPS & MAINTENANCE

Bedroom Modifications to a 2004 SeeYa. At the February post rally at Lazy Days Hans Butterwegge showed us modifications he made to the bedroom TV and the installation of a ceiling fan.

He removed the overhead TV and replaced it with a flat screen mounted on the wall above the picture at the foot of the bed. He also installed a ceiling fan above the bed. The change gives a more open appearance and provides other benefits.

If interested contact Hans at phone number Cell 941 662 7703 or email him at hans_2822@msn.com

AC PROBLEMS AIR FLOW PROBLEMS ???? (see Alfa's response at the end of this article! Bruce Monte writes... I finally solved a problem that was intermittent for years. Our A/C would work fine most of the time, but there were days when I could not get real cooling. I had it checked out at several service locations, always the same result...everything is working fine, temperature differential is fine, etc., etc. Yesterday after returning from a full day out, the inside temperature was 96 degrees with outside at 94. There was some cool air coming from the vent at the foot of the bed (we have a 2003 coach) but no air coming from the vents running down the street side of the coach. We had just been at Johnny Walker in Las Vegas where they tested the unit and found everything to be working properly. A call to Dick Albritton (an AlfaSeeYa member) got us the solution to the problem. Dick suggested I remove the vent cover at the base of the bathroom sink and use a mirror and flashlight to see if there was a problem with the ductwork. When I looked toward the back of the coach, I saw a butterfly valve in the ductwork for each system (heat and a/c). When we turned on the a/c, the valve opened as it should and I could feel the airflow. Apparently, the valve was occasionally sticking partly open, and of course, there was very reduced airflow in the coach. This last time, the valve must have stayed completely closed.

Unfortunately, intermittent problems can haunt us and make it difficult for a service tech to solve the problem. I guess the best solutions are those found at the expense of others. I hope this problem does not occur with your coach, but if you are experiencing a/c problems but the unit seems to be running fine, check the airflow in the ductwork. (Bruce Monte)

Editor’s note: I contacted Alfa’s Tech Support and here is their answer.

From Alfa Customer Service. "That is correct Mr. Huber, Your unit has two round 8" butterfly dampers, they are located in the Hydraulic compartment, just behind the rear wheel in the passenger side. You can get to them from either under the coach or behind the Freightliner plate located inside that compartment."

When Did You Last Check Your Fire Extinguisher? (From Alfa Web Site) Only fight a fire if you feel confident to continue. Keep your back to an unobstructed exit and begin by standing 6-8 feet away from the fire. Follow the four-step PASS procedure:

Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep:

Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being accidentally pressed.

Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire.

Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher. Release the handle, the discharge will stop.

Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. After the fire appears to be out, watch it carefully since it may re-ignite!

Remember extinguishers are for one time use:

REPLACE all extinguishers immediately after use regardless of how much they were used.

Care and Maintenance of Your Extinguisher from Alfa Leisure

At least once a month (more often in severe environments) you should inspect your extinguisher.

Ensure that the extinguisher is accessible in an emergency. The pressure should be at the recommended level. On extinguishers equipped with a gauge the needle should be in the green zone. On other models, depress the pin and make sure it pops back. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your model. The nozzle and handle should not be obstructed. The safety pin should be intact. There should not be any dents, leaks, rust, chemical deposits or other signs of abuse/wear. Wipe off any corrosive chemicals, oil, gunk etc. on the extinguisher.

Some manufacturers recommend shaking your dry chemical extinguishers once a month to prevent the powder from settling / packing. If you haven’t checked it for a year – turn it upside down and hit the side with your palm. If it makes a thud sound, the powder is packed. Use a rubber mallet and gently tap the inverted extinguisher until you hear it softly “ring”. Next time, don’t wait so long to check it.

Notes from the April 2007 Alfa National Rally Courtesy of John Bohn

Fantastic Fans have a stated two year warranty, but the rep at the rally says they virtually warrant anything anytime. If you have problems call 1-800-521-0298 and ask for Bob Beratta. Describe the problem to him and he will send replacement parts. If you have problems with the fan lid sticking to the rubber seat, call the above number and they will send replacement seats and glue to replace the sticking ones. Tell them how many are sticking. They had a run of bad rubber.

A representative from Generac says to use the same oil in the generator as you do in your diesel engine. Make sure the oil is designated for use in diesels.

Other tidbits from the seminars at the rally....

1) For re-caulking sidewalls use only polyurethane sealant. Do not use silicone-based products.

2) For waxing the sidewalls, make sure the wax is OK to use on Vinyl, as the decals are vinyl.

(Meguiars liquid wax and P215 Carnauba wax are excellent.)

3) For cleaning stains from the ceiling, use 10% bleach solution and dab on and blot off. DO

NOT SCRUB or BRUSH!

4) Change the 9 volt battery in the smoke detector monthly.

5) Use graphite (dry) lubricants on slideout gears. DO NOT use "wet" lubricants as they attract dirt.

6) Clean rubber roof with Murphy's Oil Soap. (Editor’s note - when I talked to the manufacturer a

few years ago they recommended using Dawn dish washing detergent.)

7) Use only Dicor sealant for caulking rubber roof repairs.

8) For the plastic parts of toilets - clean with 409

9) Do not use cleansers of any kind on interior woodwork. They can remove the protective

sealant (polyurethane) coating. Plain soap and water are preferred.

The Truth about Cell Phones and the Do Not Call Registry

For Release: February 6 , 2007

Despite Re-Circulating E-mail, It is Still Not Necessary to

Register Cell Phone Numbers. As the number of phone numbers

on the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry surpassed 139 million, the

Federal Trade Commission today reiterated that despite the claims made

in e-mails circulating on the Internet, consumers should not be concerned

that their cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers at any time

in the near future. In addition, according to the agency, it is not necessary

to register cell phone numbers on the DNC Registry to be protected from

most telemarketing calls to cell phones.

The truth about cell phones and the DNC Registry is:

Contrary to the e-mail, cell phone numbers are NOT being released to telemarketers, and you will NOT soon be getting telemarketing calls on your cell phone.

There is NO deadline by which you must register your cell phone number on the Registry.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

The national associations representing telemarketers have stated that their clients do not intend to start calling consumers’ cell phones.

There is only ONE DNC Registry. There is no separate registry for cell phones.

The DNC Registry accepts registrations from both cell phones and land lines. You must call from the phone number that you want to register. If you register online, you must respond to a confirmation e-mail.

While the telecommunications industry has been discussing the possibility of creating a wireless 411 directory, according to the FCC, even if a wireless 411 directory is established, most telemarketing calls to cell phones would still be illegal, regardless of whether the number is listed on the federal government’s National Do Not Call Registry.

For More Information

To learn more about the National DNC Registry and the rules that enforce it, visit the FTC at www.ftc.gov or the FCC at www.fcc.gov. For more information about a planned “wireless 411” directory, visit http://www.qsent.com/wireless411. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide

information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish (bilingual counselors are available to take complaints), or to get free information on any of 150 consumer topics, call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357), or use the complaint form at http://www.ftc.gov. The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft, and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Unique Tips

Easy Deviled Eggs

Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing until thoroughly mixed. Cut the corner tip of the baggy and squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done--easy clean up.

Broken Glass

Use a dry cotton ball to pick up little pieces of broken glass - the fibers catch ones you can't see!

No More Mosquitoes

Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

Flexible vacuum

To get something out of a heat/ac register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or gift wrap roll to your vacuum hose. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings. (Editor's note From an earlier suggestion .... Consider cutting window screen and installing it underneath the heat/ac registers.)

Reducing Static Cling

Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and - voila - static is gone.

Measuring Sticky Ingredients

Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

Foggy Windshield?

Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

Goodbye Fruit Flies

To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with apple cider vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, mix well.. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Get Rid of Ants

Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home" but can't digest it, so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed.

RALLY INFORMATION

As you read the Rally Schedule please note the absence of scheduled SeeYa Rallies. As our president stated earlier --- consider hosting a pre, post or a local rally for Alfa owners in your area. Some people find it easier to host a smaller gathering (local rally) before attempting to host a larger rally. As John Bohn mentioned earlier, in the past two years we've had members hosting local rallies in Albuquerque, NM; Boerne, TX; Branson, MO and in Central Illinois. I am sure they would be willing to offer you their advice. Please contact John Bohn (see page 1) if interested in hosting a local rally. Send your rally information to the editor!
